PROSERPINA: Dialogues in the Victorian Language of Flowers sets a collection of twenty images I created (you can see them in the PRINTS section) in the context of the Victorian art and literature which inspired them. Each image relates to the use of various flowers as symbols in works of art and literature of the Victorian period, engaging with a title, or a line, a character, a book or an idea. On the one hand, Proserpina is a group of illustrations to particular topics at the heart of the Victorian culture. On the other, the images seek to enter into a dialogue with the 19th century cultural life, as they each comment on, hint to, imitate, question, modify, explore and acknowledge the artistic elements that informed and inspired them, creating links across centuries and artistic media.
PROSERPINA combines photography, text, some graphic elements, typography and layout. To express fully the conception of the series and acknowledge the inspiration that informs it, I embedded the images in a book format which I designed and set myself, to replicate the process that I imagine must have taken place in designing the Kelmscott books. I very much hope that, as each chapter unfolds, the images and text will intertwine to illuminate not only the creative process which occurred in the twenty-first century, but also the rich tapestry of the Victorian literary and artistic life – the fertile ground from which PROSERPINA springs.
